Help protect yourself and others from Covid-19
Texas' first case of possible community spread of coronavirus highlights lack of testing

Officials said the patient attended a Feb. 28 barbecue at the popular Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, though it's unclear if he had symptoms at the time.

Editor's note:  This story has been updated throughout.

Local health officials said Wednesday they did not know how a Houston-area man who tested positive for the virus became infected, suggesting the first signs of community spread of the virus within Texas.

“It could very likely be the first community spread,” said Alicia Williams, director of the Montgomery County Public Health District. If the virus is being transmitted from person to person in the general population, it is much harder to contain.

The case raises questions about the number of unknown infections in Texas, given that government testing capacity for the COVID-19 disease remains limited. The largest public health lab in Texas is able to conduct a maximum of just 26 tests per day. It's unclear how many tests a state network of 10 laboratories has conducted so far, but that figure is likely in the "dozens" as of Wednesday, Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman Chris Van Deusen said.

Local officials said they were taking the threat of community spread seriously, and Houston leaders announced Wednesday they were the remainder of the weeks-long rodeo event. Houston officials later said the man, who is in his 40s, attended a Feb. 28 barbecue at the city’s biggest annual event, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. But it's unclear if he had symptoms at the time he attended.

Public health workers have been monitoring dozens of Montgomery County residents, officials said, and Montgomery Independent School District will cancel classes beginning Thursday, ahead of spring break.

Asked how the Montgomery County man might have contracted the virus, Melissa Miller said the case was still under investigation but that he had not traveled outside of Texas. “At this time, I don’t have an answer to that question,” Miller, the chief operating officer of the Montgomery County Hospital District, told reporters. “Anything is possible.”

Travelers from China and Iran Arriving in the United States

To slow the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) into the United States, CDC is working with public health partners to implement new travel procedures announced in the Presidential Proclamation on Novel Coronavirusexternal icon and Presidential Proclamation on Additional Persons Who Pose a Risk of Transmitting Coronavirusexternal icon. In summary:

  1. Foreign nationals who have visited China or Iran in the past 14 days may not enter the United States.
  2. American citizens, lawful permanent residents, and their families who have been in China or Iran in the past 14 days will be allowed to enter the United States, but will be redirected to one of 11 airports to undergo health screening. Depending on their health and travel history, they will have some level of restrictions on their movements for 14 days from the time they left China or Iran.

If you are in the second group above and are traveling to the United States:

  • Your travel will be redirected to one of 11 U.S. airports where CDC has quarantine stations.
  • You will be asked about your health and travel.
  • Your health will be screened for fever, cough, or trouble breathing.

Depending on your health and travel history:

  • You will have some restrictions on your movement for a period of 14 days from the time you left China or Iran.

These actions are being taken to protect your health, the health of other travelers and the health of U.S. communities.

Note: the following is only for extra precautionary methods and in no way is a guarantee of prevention,

Coronavirus Checklist: What You'll Need To Have At Home In Case Of Quarantine

Here are some suggestions for your coronavirus shopping list.

Food Supply

It's recommended that you stock up with enough food to last your household for two weeks.

Your stockpile should mainly be comprised of canned foods that have a long storage life and need little or no cooking. Avoid stockpiling fresh fruits and vegetables, as these will likely spoil over the 14 days.

Some examples of foods to consider include

  • Non-perishables (grains, rice, oats, pasta)
  • Canned foods (beans, tomatoes, tuna, soup, fruits)
  • Baby food
  • Pet food

Don't forget to pack snacks and other comforting foods like coffee, chocolate, chips and crackers. Although not essential, these foods can make a big difference in your mental well-being during the quarantine.

Water Supply

The American Red Cross recommends that you have at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person in the household.

If your water is untreated, you'll need to buy water filters or water purification tablets to make it safe to drink. You can also stock up in other hydrating liquids like Pedialyte and Gatorade.

Hygienic Products

The CDC recommends regular hand-washing as the best and easiest way to protect yourself from coronovirus.

When stockpiling your quarantine kit, make sure to include hand soap, sanitizers and disinfectants.

Other hygiene items to buy include:

  • Toilet paper
  • Feminine care products
  • Tissues
  • Laundry detergent
  • Diapers (if you have a baby in the house)
  • Cat litter
  • Medicine

It's essential to have a ready supply of medicine and other health care products.

Aim to have at least a 30-day supply of your prescription medications, says infectious disease expert Marguerite Neill.

Since most prescription drugs come with quantity limits, you can ask your doctor or insurance provider to help you submit an exception form.

You should also have:

A first aid kit to treat any injuries

  • Safety goggles
  • A thermometer

Over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, cough suppressants, vitamins and medicines to help you in case of vomiting or diarrhea.

Other Items

You don’t want to become bored during your quarantine.

Consider having some board games, toys, books, magazines and other fun stuff to keep the family occupied.

Other essential items to have in the house include:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Hand-cranked or battery-powered radio
  • Copies of your health records and other personal documents
  • Emergency blanket
  • Maps
  • Whistle
  • Plastic sheeting
Steps to Prevent Illness

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Take steps to protect yourself

Illustration: washing hands with soap and water

Clean your hands often
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Stay home if you’re sick

Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
  • Throw used tissues in the trash.
  • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

man wearing a mask

Wear a face-mask if you are sick
  • If you are sick:  You should wear a face-mask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a face-mask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a face-mask if they enter your room. Learn what to do if you are sick.
  • If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a face-mask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a face-mask). Face-masks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.

cleaning a counter

Clean and disinfect
  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, counter-tops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
  • If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

Patrick Crusius ID’d as Suspected El Paso Walmart Shooter

Patrick Crusius has been identified as the suspected gunman who attacked a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, a senior law-enforcement source told The Daily Beast.

Crusius, 21, is a resident of Allen, Texas, outside Dallas. Police said one person is in custody for the attack. Authorities “ruled out” multiple shooters and said there are no outstanding suspects.

{The Daily Beast} a white man in his twenties, who was dressed in black, opened fire with a rifle in front of the store’s entrance around 11 a.m. The gunman shot one person at point-blank range, the eyewitness said. Surveillance footage captured the gunman entering the store, where another eyewitness said he fired “aisle by aisle.”

Authorities are investigating whether Crusius wrote an anti-immigrant manifesto published online shortly before the attack, the source said. At an evening press conference, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen, who stopped short of naming the suspect, confirmed that authorities were reviewing a “manifesto.”

We must prepare for and develop a solution to avoid mass killings throughout our country. DIVIDED we stand...we must rally together for peace, we are all equal.

04/29/2019 Parents, please vaccinate your children on time and get the required vaccinations to decrease diseases in our country. Measles are running rampart, so please get your kids the important measles, mumps, rubella shots (MMR). Side note* I am a parent of four very healthy adult children, I have never missed a vaccination for either of them and they are all very healthy. So please do not be afraid to vaccinate your children. Their is no direct proof that Autism is linked to vaccinations. If you are not sure please ask questions, from a medical profession.
